What is an Occupational Therapist?
An occupational therapist is a healthcare professional who specializes in helping individuals improve their ability to perform daily activities and achieve greater independence. They assess a person’s physical, cognitive, and emotional needs, and develop tailored interventions that include skill-building exercises, adaptive strategies, and environmental modifications. Occupational therapists focus on enhancing overall well-being and facilitating participation in meaningful life roles.

Everyone’s therapeutic journey is different!
Parent/Carer information gathering session/phone call
This includes a 30 minute phone consultation to discuss the participants diagnosis, relevant medical history, background information, goals and aspirations.
Initial face to face sessions
Rapport building and assessments are begun in this first session. Background information gathering is continued from the phone call conversation. Goals are established and finalised.
Assessments
Standardised and informal assessments are completed in the following areas to establish baseline and measure progress throughout the therapeutic journey. This may include assessments on:
o Self-care skills
o Fine Motor skills
o Handwriting
o Sensory processing
o Executive functioning
o Social skills
o Cognition
o Gross Motor skills
o Life skills
Capacity building sessions
Each capacity building session aims to improve an individual’s skills, abilities, and independence in different daily activities. A holistic approach is used to take into account the physical, cognitive, emotional and social factors unique to each participant, resulting in a comprehensive plan that meets their specific needs and goals.
Functional capacity reports, progress reports and assistive technology reports
These reports (and others that may be required given your specific circumstances) can be requested throughout the therapeutic journey.
Reassessment
Following regular capacity building sessions aimed at the needs and goals of each participant, reassessment is completed to evaluate an individuals progress aligned with their goals.
